Foods That are Good for Your Immune System

Foods That are Good for Your Immune System

Keeping your body healthy is important for leading a long and prosperous life. One key way we can ensure our bodies are in good condition is by choosing to eat the right foods. Eating foods that are good for your immune system help make your body better at fighting illnesses. By including the following foods into your diet, you will have more time to feel good and do the things you love.

Citrus Fruits are the ‘Zest’

Citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits are rich in vitamin C. Vitamin C increases the production of white blood cells which are key for fighting infections. As humans, we cannot synthesize our own vitamin C. This is why it is important for us to consume foods high in vitamin C on a daily basis. Red bell peppers, although not a citrus fruit, are another great source of vitamin C.

Time to Broc ‘n’ roll

This cruciferous vegetable broccoli is a good source for anti-oxidant vitamins A, C and E. It also has vital compounds that are known to prevent cancer and boost liver function. Alongside these, broccoli contains sulforaphane which is responsible for activating over 200 genes. These genes, in turn, produce anti-oxidant enzymes like glutathione, known for reducing inflammation.

This one’s Tea-riffic

Green tea has long been drunk throughout generations due to its health boosting qualities. Green tea has high levels of epigallocatechin (EGCG), a powerful anti-oxidant that boosts the immune system. It has also been known to protect the body against certain types of cancer as it contains catechin. Additionally, its source of amino acid L-theanine aids the production of germ fighting compounds in T cells.

The food that gets you ‘gar-licking’ your lips

As well as keeping the vampires away, garlic can help fight infections and lower blood pressure. One of the key compounds that helps this is allicin. Allicin is the compound that gives garlic its notable smell, but also helps support the immune system.

Poultry in Motion

It may seem like an old wives’ tale, but chicken soup is actually a great way to help you feel better if your ill and boost your immune system. Soup that uses both meat and bone, will be full of nutrients like gelatine and chondroitin that are helpful in improving your health.

When cooked in other ways, chicken can still be one of the best foods that are good for your immune system. Chicken provides the body with selenium which contains antioxidants that help control free radicals. It is also well known for containing plenty of protein, which is important for the growth and development of organs.

Although very important, a good diet is not the only thing you must do to keep a healthy immune system. Accompany these foods with plenty of exercise and you’ll be fighting the illnesses away with no troubles.
